Children's Day was a long-forgotten celebration for me,which stopped when I was hardly in 7th or 8th grade. But yesterday proved to be the best children's day ever for a group of us after a long time!!! As mentioned in one of my previous posts I am a volunteer of Bhumi. So,yesterday I was called for the 'Children's Day' program at my center. I reached there on time and found all kids prettily dressed up and all excited about the show. I was expecting a normal show were kids give a speech or sing and dance. But WOW! that was what I exclaimed after each performance.
There was a broad theme of Children's Day and a sub-theme of traditions of India. They started with a speech about Jawaharlal Nehru and a folk song about him. Then was an instrumental show with sitar, tabla and veena.Inspite of a loss of light, the kid played sitar in the dark which really proved his talent. Then it started getting better when the kids put up a show on "Kuzhaindagal Urimai"(Children Rights). They explained situations of why kids are denied education and what the consequences were. It was something which was notable because all these kids came from a very under-privileged background and they were getting education because of various awareness camps and counselling which was administered to their parents.
Next was a show on the history of Tamil Nadu from about 2000yrs till now. The kids were saints, kings, farmers, archaeologists and computer engineers too. It was beautifully acted upon from the hills, the rain, the trees, the river, the sea the children were a part of nature. And finally "Thappattam" a rural art of Tamil Nadu was performed by them which wanted everyone in the audience to dance with them.
It was the best children's day with a lot of memories and thoughts to take home.
